A monster card does two things at once when you use it:
- You become that monster - its model, its scale, even its idle sounds.
- You gain a buff derived from the creature it came from.
Both run on one five-minute clock. They used to be a minute of disguise and ten minutes of buff; since 3 September they start and end together, because the buff takes its lifetime from the transformation row and the two cannot be given separate ones.
⭐ You can hide in its pack
The disguise used to change how you looked and not what looked at you. It does both now: a monster will not spot a player wearing its own face, and other players see the monster's name over your head rather than yours, never in enemy red.
Three limits, and they matter:
- Same kind only. You are rendered as one specific monster, so only monsters of that kind ignore you. A Boar card will not walk you past a dragon.
- Hit it and it fights back. Only the passive "I can see you" path is refused. Aggro you earn by attacking is untouched.
- A monster already fighting you keeps fighting. The disguise breaks nothing that has already noticed you.
What the buff does
Each card's blessing comes from the monster it came from, so cards are not interchangeable. A card either:
- restores health or mana over time, or
- trades attack against defence, in the direction that suits the creature.
Recovery is a regeneration rate, not a heal. It is summed into your own natural regeneration tick rather than paid as a lump. The ceilings are 200 HP and 400 MP, so the strongest card is roughly three times your own regeneration - substantial, but not a second health bar. This was re-sized on 2 September, when it was measured against a player's tick instead of against monster health; the mana variant also stopped being limited to obviously magical creatures and now covers 67 cards - any monster that hits harder with magic than with its weapon.
How big you get
Transformation size comes from the monster's own model, not from a flat rule, so a card no longer makes you gigantic. Where the monster lives decides the ceiling:
- a monster you meet on a field map renders at its own size - the whole point of the disguise, and something 75 cards were being denied
- a monster that only ever appears inside a dungeon or a raid is capped at an ordinary monster's build
Getting them
There are 641 cards, one for every distinct monster name in the game, and every cardable monster drops its own. Boss cards come from dungeon clear rewards rather than from the ground. Cards drop noticeably more often since 2 September.
Cards are also sold in the Item Mall as transformation items.
Rules
- You cannot use a card while mounted. Dismount first.
- The transformation is server-enforced, so what you see is what everyone else sees.
Where to go next
- Monster database - look up the monster behind a card
- Costumes - permanent appearance changes instead
